A fever grips the Théâtre de Verdure.
In front of a vast sequined curtain, eight powerful performers from the legendary Faso Danse Théâtre march across the red circle on stage–almost a burning sun–, looking each other over, squaring off. Serge Aimé Coulibaly, a Burkinabe choreographer and towering figure of African performing arts, draws on Wara and Senufo traditions along with Western carnivals in his new work: a dance party fuelled by an irrepressible lust for life. Flashing images of crowds and dictatorships. Where is the path to democracy? Down with the rulers of the world! Is that James Baldwin’s voice hovering over the uprisings? Niaka Sacko sings in memory of brave men. Feverish rhythms, exhilarating dance routines, trances, evil spirits, masks: bodies escape from the prison of themselves. The world of the ancestors pushes through, opening up other possible dimensions beyond the living. Life goes on!
