Gabrielle Roy was born in Saint-Boniface, Manitoba.

After obtaining a teaching certificate at the Winnipeg Normal School, Gabrielle Roy became a teacher in Manitoba (1929-1937), then stayed in France and England where she studied drama. On her return in 1939, she came to live in Quebec and became a journalist.
His first novel, Bonheur d'occasion, was well received by critics and earned him the Prix Fémina in 1947, a mention from the Literary Guild of America, a medal from the Académie canadienne-française and the Governor General's Prize. Many other literary awards have also marked his work.
