Ernest Cole: Lost and Found
Ernest Cole (1940-1990) grew up in the townships and discovered photography as a child.
He was the first black photographer to document and denounce the horrors of Apartheid: his legendary “House of Bondage” (1967), long censored, earned him exile in the USA. Thirty years after the end of the dictatorship in South Africa, the great Raoul Peck devotes a rich documentary to this extraordinary, enigmatic and courageous artist, whose work was long shrouded in mystery. Largely made up of Cole's magnificent photographs, the film takes us on a sometimes sublime, sometimes violent, always fascinating journey into the struggles and counter-cultures of the 60s and 70s, and rehabilitates the legacy of a pioneer.
