MÆ - Motion Aftereffect

The work features motion-capture data (both found online and uniquely generated), ready-made and custom 3D models, alongside varied internet-sourced monologues. The monologues feature first-person accounts of VR gameplay, VR pornography, psychedelic drug explorations, out-of-body experiences, alongside how-to tutorials for both astral projection customizing 3D avatars.

These intentionally diverse monologues situate virtual technologies alongside analog methods like psychedelics and metaphysical explorations, as tools to expand individual perceptions of reality, time, and space. The work references historical and contemporary approaches to the mediation of the body, from Oskar Schlemmer’s Bauhaus stage experiments and Al Hansen’s Fluxus-era “Lettuce Manifesto” to Brody Condon’s early video game art (“Adam Killer”, 1999) and the speculative provocations of Manifest.AR’s 2011 “Manifesto for Augmented Reality Art”. These manifestos, texts, and artworks offer insight into the digital replication, transference, and translation of human movement to screen(s) and/or stage.
