Miles Smiles - Wayne Shines
From 1965 to 1968, Davis and Shorter's Second Great Quintet—with Hancock, Carter, and Williams—produced some of the most audacious music of the century.
Composer Jean-Nicolas Trottier has taken that legacy further: building original jazz symphonies from Shorter's melodic cells and rhythmic figures—not arrangements, but new compositions in dialogue with the source. Premiered in 2019 at L'Astral and released as a live album in 2023—named best large ensemble album of the year by the Ottawa Citizen—the work returns, revealing an architecture only hinted at in the original recordings.
