The Mi’kmaq were likely among the first to encounter European explorer John Cabot in 1497, on the east coast of what is now Atlantic Canada.
Today, this spirit of welcome and exchange between two worlds is expressed through the music and fiddle playing of Morgan Toney, a roots revelation from Cape Breton. Drawing on millennia of tradition, Morgan Toney blends the Scottish heritage of this Nova Scotia island with Mi’kmaq songs, stories, and language to create his own musical style: “Mi’kmaltic,” a unique fusion of Mi’kmaq and Celtic influences.
With pride, Morgan Toney shares the traditions of the L’nu people—rich in universal teachings—with the rest of Canada and the world. Alongside Keith Mullins (guitar, vocals, and percussion) and Ryan Roberts (mandolin and vocals), he creates a true cultural fusion, a bridge between two worlds, and helps pave the way toward truth and reconciliation.
