Kuh Del Rosario’s sculptures are constructed from everyday waste – packaging, kitchen scraps, leaves, branches and pigments mixed from pantry ingredients.
The artist incorporates these materials not only because they are commonplace and thus readily available, but also for the narratives they can reveal. By transforming things that are typically regarded as detritus or discarded, she unveils the potential, value and meaning that lie beneath the surface. Her installation illustrates the different ways in which a person can connect to a specific place and the people who live there, exploring how these relationships help to shape and affirm one’s fundamental sense of self.
The title of the exhibition – A Trembling Rock Rises – evokes 2 major mountain ranges. To the west of Canada lie the Rockies, which made a strong impression on the artist when she first arrived in the country. The mountain range symbolizes stability, and it shaped Del Rosario’s sense of belonging and her understanding of the landscape. In the east of Canada, she discovered the Laurentians after moving to Montreal, following 3 years of living in the Philippines. Mont Tremblant in particular, exemplifies the continuous movement of geological forces over thousands of years, holding within it, the promise of renewal. The mountain encapsulates the uncertainty inherent in new beginnings and the resilience needed to move forward into the unknown.
