Roger Lemelin (Québec, 1919 – id.
, 1992) is a novelist and a journalist. He notably published At the Foot of the Gentle Slope (1944) and Les Plouffe (1948). This novel was a huge success. In 1952, a first adaptation for radio was produced. Then in 1953, a new adaptation, The Plouffe Family, was made and television broadcast it between 1953 and 1959. Finally, Lemelin, with the collaboration of Gilles Carle (1928-2009), made a new adaptation for the cinema under the title Les Plouffe. He also wrote The Magnificent Stone (1952) and The Crime of Ovide Plouffe (1982), which was made into a film by Denys Arcand in 1984. As a journalist, he was a Canadian correspondent for the American magazines Time and Life (1944- 1952). He was also president and CEO of the daily newspaper La Presse (1972-1981). During his career, he was awarded several decorations and recognitions including the David Prize (1946) and the French Academy Prize (1946). He was also a member of the Goncourt Academy (1974), Companion of the Order of Canada (1980) and Officer of the National Order of Quebec (1989).
